Argus Law Suite - Security Module

Argus Law Suite has a comprehensive security and auditing package. The access to Argus is controlled by user id and password combination that is protected by using the latest in encryption technology  algorithm. Access to individual Argus functionality can also be customized for each "Group" and/or "User Id". To start the security application, click on the security icon on your desktop.

Argus comes with one built in group: Administrators. This group is akin to the systems administrator's group and any user added to this group will have complete access over every functionality of the system. Be cautious in who gets assigned to this group.

To add a new group press the Add button:

This will bring up the above screen with 4 tabs. First enter the Group Id and name in the Identification group box and click the Permissions tab:

This tab allows setting the permission that members of this group will have. The top drop box is used to select an Argus area for which permissions are being set. Press the down arrow:

After selecting the area simply check the box that you would like the members of this group to have access:

In this case this group (TimeEntry) is to be allowed the ability to Add time, Modify Time and to Post time. The Audit tab is used to set an auditing policy for this group:

This works the same way as the Permissions tab and it can be used to select events/tasks that will be audited by the system. In this case we want to audit every time entry that is changed after it has been added:

We simply check the Modify time box under the Transactions area. We will now set a security Policy for this group by pressing the Policy button:

Select the number of days after which passwords expire for users in this group. This is a required feature for a secure system that the users passwords have to be changed every so many days. In this case passwords will expire every 30 days. Now add the group by pressing the OK button.

Now that the group is added we will add a user to this group:

This is done by highlighting the group that the user is going to be added to and pressing the Users button:

This screen will list any existing users in this group and they may be changed or removed. To add a new user press the Add button:

This is the screen to add individual users to a group. Identify a scheme for user ids and use it consistently. In our example we use the first initial followed by the last name. Enter a Password for this user and then confirm it. Use an easy password because the first time the user logs in with this id they will be forced to change their own password. This is another step for good security i.e. even the administrator shouldn't know what a users individual password is. The Super User box can be checked, this will overwrite the default setting for the group and will give full access to the user, use this with great caution. The enabled box should be checked to allow this user to be enabled, uncheck this box for an existing user and they will loose all access to the system. This is a quick way to disable access of an employee who has been terminated. The Report Directory is the location on your server (or local machine) where the reports spooled by this user will be stored. The Email is the email address for this user, this will be used for sending notification of tasks being completed successfully (or notice of failure) by email. Argus only allows a single login for any one user, this can, however, cause a problem if the user's desktop is rebooted without properly logging off, if this happens then the user will be denied access the next time he/she tries to login. To fix this problem press the Reset login count button. CAUTION: do not use this button if a user is normally logged on.

Next we press the Permissions Tab. This will allow setting of things that this person can do on the system. This will normally default to the settings for the group but they may be further customized here.

Just to demonstrate this we select the Transactions area and see that this user has the same settings as the group. The Audit Tab works the same way i.e. this person will be automatically audited for the same things that the group is audited for. We can further customize this through the Audit tab:

As can be seen the same Audit options are selected. Now press the Policy tab to set the security policy for this user.

This screen shows that the password will expire every 30 days. The Date of Reset shows the date that the password was last reset. The Force Reset box can be checked to force the user to reset his/her password the next time they logon to the system. We can add the user by pressing the OK button.
